Oakwood Learn Lesson The Hard Way
By James Shaw

Oakwood missed a chance to go second in Sussex County Division 2 on Saturday as a string of defensive errors meant they were beaten 5-2 at home by Lancing.
Gerald Manville and Tom Tolfrey got the goals for Oaks, but it was at the other end of the pitch where the home side lost the game.
But as disappointed that Oakwood will be, Lancing will be delighted with a result that did not expect in the slightest.
And to deepen the misery for John Mist and his young team, key central midfielder Scott Mean hobbled off inside a minute with a calf injury that could keep him out for a month.
It was inside 10 minutes that Oakwood’s defence was first breached, a short back-header intercepted by Lancing’s lively Rob Partridge, who rounded Shaw and teed up Dan Griffin to put the visitors 1-0 up.
But Oakwood were soon level, Manville notching his fourth in two games via a suspect piece of goalkeeping.
The scores weren’t level for long however, a missed interception in the Oakwood rearguard allowing Partridge to open his own tally. And before the half was over, Oaks defender Charlie Adsett unfortunately headed past Shaw to make the score 3-1.
The hosts were then dealt a further blow when captain Scott Bidwell hobbled off with a recurrence of a back injury.
After a rousing half time talk, Oakwood came out fighting, increasing the tempo and intensity of their game, and were rewarded when Tom Tolfrey finished well for his third in 2 games.
Manville then appeared unlucky to have a goal ruled out for a foul, but moments later Oaks failed to clear a cross and were made to pay, making the score 4-2.
Lancing then missed a penalty to put themselves further in front, but they were not to be denied as more questionable defending in the final minute led to a fifth and final goal for the visitors.
Manager John Mist described himself as “very disappointed” after the game, but this result will have brought Oakwood back down to earth after their great result against Rye the previous week. Mist knows that this setback will be a valuable lesson in the long run if his young side are to achieve promotion.
