Mighty Manville’s Magic Inspires Vital Oaks Win

Gerald Manville struck a first-half hat-trick as 10 man Oakwood thrashed high flying Rye 6-2.
Ben Arthur was sent off for a second yellow card after Manville had cancelled out Rye’s opener inside the opening half hour.
And Manville completed his hat-trick with two stunning efforts before half time, with Tom Tolfrey (2) and Kieron Purkis completing the rout in the second half before Rye could score a consolation.
Oakwood made the long journey to Rye in the knowledge that a win could lift them into the upper echelons of Sussex County League 2. But they endured a hostile opening twenty minutes, with the hosts rattling the bar before poor marking from a softly conceded free kick gifted Rye the opener.
Manville soon levelled however after a slide-rule pass from Ben Arthur cut apart the very square Rye defence. And Oakwood’s centre forward doubled his tally a few minutes later with a stunning effort from a full 30 yards, dipping the ball over the helpless keeper to give the visitors the lead.
Arthur was given his marching orders on the half hour after being given a harsh second yellow card for dissent following some contentious refereeing.
But this didn’t stop Oakwood, as Manville latched onto ‘keeper James Shaw’s long kick to lob the keeper and complete his treble.
Charlie Adsett, skipper Scott Bidwell and young Nathan Hayward were excellent in defence throughout the match, and they needed to be particularly alert as Rye started to build pressure after the half-time interval.
However, it was Oakwood who scored first in the second half, thanks to Tom Tolfrey firing home off a Scott Mean corner, and Oaks’ lead was extended further.
Manager John Mist was then sent to the stand after an altercation with the referee, but he couldn’t contain his delight when substitute Kieron Purkis cut in from the left and fired an unstoppable shot into the top right corner.
And the Tinsley Lane club were struggling to believe their luck when another substitute, Mark Hills, was adjudged to have been fouled in the box, enabling Tolfrey to net his second of the match from the spot.
There was still enough time for Rye to scramble a consolation in the dying seconds, but it wouldn’t spoil Oakwood’s day as they recorded a great result.
Oakwood play Lancing at Tinsley Lane next Saturday in Sussex County Division 2, where a win could see them go 2nd in the League.

Team: Shaw, Adsett, Bidwell, Hayward, D. Hills, Mean, Clarke, Arthur, Gardner, Tolfrey, Manville. Subs: Purkis (Manville), Cullimore (D. Hills), M. Hills (Clarke).
